ABOUT THE BOOK
A 92-YEAR-OLD veteran who spent three years in a Japanese prisoner of war camp has been awarded a badge in recognition of his service. Ralph Timothy, of St Michael’s Convent and Convalescent Home, in Marine Parade East, Clacton, was presented with the Veteran’s Badge at a special ceremony at the home. Mr Timothy moved to Clacton at the age of 19, before joining the Clacton’s Own Regiment, with
the onset of war, the bombardier was posted to Martlesham, North Weald and H.M.S Ganges at Shotley before fighting with the Royal Artillery in Singapore. With the surrender of the British Army in 1942, he found himself in Japanese PoW camps. “It was like hell in there and we never thought we would actually make it out alive. We were used for slave labour and were forced to fill trucks.” “We worked in groups of five and the last man to finish was beaten, so we always helped the last man to make sure we finished at the same time.” “It was lovely to be liberated by the Americans from the camps and it was great to see their faces.” “We didn’t think anyone knew we were there or that anyone would try to free us.” Following the war Mr Timothy returned to Clacton. He took on numerous labouring jobs and also worked as a fish frier at Butlins. Mr Timothy was given the badge by Bob George of the Burma Star Association in front of his sons John and Ralph and their wives Shirley and Sally. Mr George said it was a fitting tribute for the towns Burma Star Association to present the badge to a Clacton man who spent so many years in the prisoner camps.
